Session 053: Orchestra's Kin
🎙️ Session Recording
📜 Session Overview
Beneath Hearthglass, the party gathered themselves after surviving the split ambush, battered but alive. The strange burrowing creatures they had slain carried faint crystalline growths — another sign that the corruption below the city was not limited to the malformed drider. Whatever waited deeper had layers of protection, and each one felt more deliberate than the last.
Following the small blue-lit drone, the party found a vast shaft descending into darkness. Its walls were lined with leyline crystals that clung to touch and pulled at the mind, offering power at a cost. With rope, a featherfall potion, and the help of their dragons, the group made the dangerous descent — slipping past jagged crystal and perfectly bored circular tunnels before landing in an underground pool far below.
There, hidden beneath the mines, they discovered a forgotten stone city. Its streets were silent, its buildings abandoned, and its people gone. In their place moved small crystalline figures, gnome-like in shape, with dark glassy bodies and pointed limbs. They did not attack. They only waved, watched, and wandered through a city marked by repeating eight-foot holes carved through streets, walls, and buildings with unsettling precision.
At the heart of the city stood a cathedral-like structure marked with the image of a great eye. Inside, the party found the remnants of an older faith: sun symbols buried beneath newer carvings of the eye, memorial offerings left in alcoves, and signs that the place was somehow both sacred and profaned. Agelaius Phoeniceus took rubbings of the strange markings, and Sinora recognized the script as Gnomish, tying the lost city to the small forms that now wandered its streets.
The temple also revealed the dangers of greed and curiosity. In a lower chamber filled with scrolls and locked chests, Warwick Willows sensed magic humming through the room — only to discover that the chests were not treasures at all, but mana-draining mimics. When one clamped onto Agelaius Phoeniceus, the party fought to force it away, eventually shoving the creature into one of the circular holes and sending it tumbling into the dark. From beyond that same darkness, faint hushling screams echoed — a warning that the city's horrors were not done stirring.
With a tome recovered, strange items taken, and more questions than answers, the party pressed on. Then Broj's eyes turned gold once more. The presence within him, known now as Orchestra, seemed to guide him across the abandoned city as he whispered of a brother. The blue drone led the way as well, drawing them toward another great circular tunnel and deeper into the truth beneath Hearthglass.
The final descent brought them into a massive crystalline chamber where their dragons caught them from freefall and carried them down to a platform before an impossible sight. A vast cluster of small hushling forms lay curled around a trapped beholder-like horror — its body fused into crystal, its mouth stretched into the gaunt shape of the hushlings, and its enormous central eye glowing the same golden yellow as Broj's.
In that moment, the purpose of the journey became clear. The drider had been a guardian. The burrowing monsters had been another defense. The ruined city, the Gnomish script, the eye carved over the sun, the hushlings, and Broj's golden-eyed visitor all pointed to the same buried truth. Axioma had drawn the party here because this creature was connected to Orchestra, to Broj, and to the nightmare spreading beneath Hearthglass.
⚔️ Key Events
- Short Rest and Salvage: After the ambush, the party rested and Aedric Vale harvested two curthic claw blades from the slain creatures, noting the small crystalline growths along their spines — a sign of corruption, though far less entrenched than what had claimed the drider.
- The Leyline Shaft: The blue drone disappears down a 20-foot-wide shaft stretching hundreds of feet into darkness. Its walls are lined with leyline crystals that adhere to touch, draining mana at contact. Aedric Vale confirms this when he deliberately touches one — gaining a charge but feeling something purposefully try to break through the wall of his mind.
- The Descent: Using a featherfall potion from Agelaius Phoeniceus, a guide rope, and Warwick Willows' darkvision to navigate, the party makes the treacherous descent — their dragons carrying those who need it — and lands in an underground pool at the base of the shaft.
- The Underground City: Beyond a carved stone archway, a forgotten cobblestone city stretches further than most of the party can see. Roofless multi-story buildings, stone tables, and empty streets fill a vast cavern, utterly silent except for the tinking footsteps of small crystalline gnome-like automatons that wave at the party and wander on without aggression.
- The Eye Cathedral: Aedric Vale scouts ahead on Nathira and locates a massive cathedral-like structure at the city's heart, marked by the same carved eye symbol found in Hearthglass above. Three buildings are found filled with rows of the crystalline gnome automatons — standing perfectly still, like soldiers waiting for a command that never came.
- A Faith Buried: Inside the cathedral, the party discovers sun symbols beneath the eye carvings — an older faith overwritten. Memorial alcoves line the walls with centuries-old offerings of food, coins, rings, and amulets. Aedric Vale's divine sense detects ground that is both consecrated and desecrated, an impossibility that speaks to the violence of whatever replaced the original faith here.
- Gnomish Script: Sinora recognizes the script carved throughout the city as Gnomish, connecting the lost civilization to the crystalline automatons still wandering its streets.
- The Mana-Draining Mimics: In a lower chamber, Warwick Willows detects magical vibrations from a row of locked chests — but they are mimics designed to drain mana rather than deal physical damage. One clamps onto Agelaius Phoeniceus and the party wrestles it loose, ultimately shoving the creature into one of the circular holes. Hushling screams echo back from the darkness below.
- The Offering Taken: Despite warnings from both Sorina and Sinora to leave the memorial offerings undisturbed, Warwick Willows pockets a vibrating magical ring from one of the alcoves.
- Orchestra Speaks of a Brother: Broj's eyes go gold once more and the layered entity within him — Orchestra — begins guiding him through the city as the drone leads them toward another shaft. The word it speaks is unmistakable: a brother waits below.
- The Final Reveal: Dragons catch the party mid-fall in a vast crystalline chamber below. At its center, surrounded by curled hushlings, sits a trapped beholder-like horror — its body fused into crystal, its form warped into the same jaw-split shape as the hushlings, its enormous central eye glowing the same golden yellow as Broj's. Axioma drew the party here for exactly this.
🗡️ Combat Encounters
The Mana-Draining Mimics
Location: Lower chamber of the underground cathedral
Enemies: Mana-draining mimics disguised as locked chests, vibrating with magical energy
Outcome: The party identified and repelled the mimics. One creature was wrestled off Agelaius Phoeniceus and shoved into a circular bore-hole by the combined effort of Warwick Willows, Sorina, and Agelaius Phoeniceus.
Notable Moments:
- Warwick Willows' arcane sense identified the chests as magical before they struck, though not quickly enough to avoid the grab entirely.
- Shoving the mimic into one of the city's mysterious circular holes triggered distant hushling screams from somewhere far below — confirming the holes connect to deeper horrors.
- The mimics targeted mana rather than health, threatening the party's spell resources deep in hostile territory.
👥 NPCs Encountered
Orchestra
Role: Entity residing within Broj
Spoke through Broj's golden eyes to guide the party deeper into the city. Named by Agelaius Phoeniceus for its layered, chorus-like voice — not one presence but many, all speaking at once. Communicated the existence of a brother waiting in the crystalline chamber below.
The Crystalline Automatons
Role: Inhabitants of the lost gnome city
Small, gnome-like figures of dark obsidian crystal with jagged features, pointed limb-stilts, and no visible eyes. Entirely non-hostile. They wave at the party as they pass, then continue their silent wandering. Hundreds fill the streets and three entire buildings hold rows of them standing motionless — waiting for something.
The Trapped Beholder-Horror
Role: Orchestra's Kin — imprisoned in crystal
A massive beholder-like creature fused into the crystalline structure of the deepest chamber. Its body has been warped into the same jaw-split, elongated shape as the hushlings. Its enormous central eye glows golden yellow — the same light that appears in Broj's eyes when Orchestra speaks. Surrounded by hushlings curled around it like worshippers or mourners. The source of the nightmare spreading beneath Hearthglass, or its first victim.
🔍 Important Discoveries
The Forgotten Gnome City
A complete underground city lies beneath Hearthglass — cobblestone streets, multi-story buildings, stone plazas — utterly abandoned by its living inhabitants and now wandered only by crystalline automatons. Sinora identified the carved script throughout as Gnomish, suggesting the city was built by gnomes or for them. The city's age is unknown, but the offerings in its cathedral suggest it predates the eye-worship now dominant in Hearthglass above.
A Faith Replaced
The cathedral at the city's center was originally dedicated to a different god — sun symbols are buried beneath the eye carvings that replaced them. Aedric Vale's divine sense detects both consecrated and desecrated ground in the same space, suggesting a violent overwriting of the original faith. The memorial alcoves still hold offerings centuries old, untouched and still partly magical.
The Leyline Crystals
The shaft connecting the mining level to the underground city is lined with leyline crystals. Direct contact causes the crystals to adhere to flesh, but simultaneously charges the toucher with mana. Releasing that charge back into the crystal illuminates it and causes it to release its grip. The crystals also carry a psychic threat: Aedric Vale felt something deliberately try to break through the walls of his mind when he expended the charge.
The Eight-Foot Holes
Perfectly circular bore-holes eight feet in diameter appear throughout the city at regular intervals — in streets, in buildings, behind the cathedral altar. They are machined with impossible precision. The curthics from the prior session used similar tunnels. Shoving the mimic into one triggered hushling screams from somewhere far below. The holes connect every layer of the structure beneath Hearthglass in a deliberate pattern.
Orchestra's Kin
The entity Orchestra — which has inhabited Broj since the early descent beneath Hearthglass — has a connection to a beholder-like creature trapped in the deepest crystalline chamber. The creature is fused into crystal, its body warped into the same jaw-split shape as the hushlings, its central eye glowing the same golden yellow as Broj's when Orchestra speaks. Whether this creature is a prisoner, a source, or something else entirely remains unknown. Axioma has been guiding the party here all along.
💰 Loot & Rewards
- Curthic Claw Blades (x2): Harvested by Aedric Vale from the slain curthic creatures before the descent. Large, serrated blades with small crystalline protrusions growing from the spines. Potential crafting materials for Zar'keth.
- Recovered Tome: Retrieved from the cathedral's lower chamber during the exploration. Contents unknown.
- Vibrating Ring: Pocketed by Warwick Willows from the memorial alcoves despite explicit warnings. The ring was one of several offerings still emitting a magical hum. Nature and effects unknown.
- Gnomish Rubbings: Agelaius Phoeniceus took rubbings of the carved script and markings throughout the cathedral. The script has been identified as Gnomish and may reveal lore about the city and its history.
- Leyline Charge (temporary): Aedric Vale briefly gained a mana charge from contact with a leyline crystal. The crystals in the shaft can provide power, but the psychic cost and adhesion risk make them dangerous.
✨ Character Moments
Agelaius Phoeniceus — A Name for the Presence
Agelaius Phoeniceus is the one who decides that "dream demon" is no longer sufficient. When Broj's eyes go gold and the layered, impossible chorus begins to speak, it is Egg who reaches for something more precise. He names the entity Orchestra — for the sound of it, for the strangeness of it, for the fact that no single word captures what it is. It is a small act of naming in a place where names carry power, and it sticks.
Aedric Vale — The Careful Hand
Where others might have charged forward, Aedric Vale methodically scouted the city on Nathira, mapped the locations of the automatons, identified the pattern in the circular holes, tested the leyline crystals deliberately rather than by accident, and used his divine sense to read the cathedral's spiritual history. He took the two curthic claw blades not out of greed but out of tactical thinking. In a session of discovery, he was the party's most reliable instrument.
Sinora — The Script Recognized
A quiet moment, but a significant one. As others debated the purpose of the carvings throughout the cathedral and the city, Sinora recognized them as Gnomish. The script changes everything about how the party understands the city and its still-wandering inhabitants. When the dead speak in stone, someone still has to be able to read it.
Sorina — The Line Held
Sorina stands firm twice in this session. First at the memorial alcoves, where she tells Warwick Willows plainly that the offerings belong to the dead and will not be touched — a conviction that costs her nothing but earns her nothing either, because he takes something anyway. Second, when the mimic clamps onto Agelaius, she is one of the three who wrestles it free. She does not always win the arguments. She shows up regardless.
Warwick Willows — The Hand That Reaches
After being clearly told to leave the memorial offerings alone, Warwick Willows slips away to pocket a vibrating ring from one of the alcoves. Sinora and Sorina both catch him. He shrugs. The ring hums in his pocket with something that has not yet made itself known. In a city full of things that have been waiting for a very long time, taking something that was left for the dead may yet have consequences.

🎭 Looking Ahead
The party stands in a vast crystalline chamber before a creature that should not exist and cannot escape. The hushlings curl around it like a congregation or a mourning guard. Its central eye burns the same gold as Broj's, and Orchestra has spoken only one word to describe it: brother.
Axioma has guided the party here through the drone, through the city, through every layer of the nightmare beneath Hearthglass. The drider was a guardian. The curthics were soldiers. The crystalline city was a record. And this creature — fused, trapped, dreaming or not dreaming — is the center of everything that has gone wrong below the glass.
What it means to free it, destroy it, or speak to it is the next question. Whatever the answer, Warwick Willows has a ring in his pocket that someone left for the dead. The city is older than anyone remembered. And Orchestra is still watching from behind Broj's eyes.
