📜 Session Overview

Beneath Hearthglass, the party woke from their long rest with no true sense of safety, only the uneasy silence left behind after the drider's death. The little crystalline drone still hovered nearby, blue-lit and watchful, a reminder that Axioma had taken interest. Whatever waited below had not forgotten them.

The way forward was still choked with white webbing and thicker wire-like strands, and as the party began cutting through, Agelaius Phoeniceus noticed something wrong with Broj. His eyes had gone gold again. The presence within him answered in a crackling, layered sound — less like a voice and more like an entire impossible chorus speaking at once. Egg, deciding that "dream demon" was not specific enough anymore, named the golden-eyed entity Orchestra.

It was strange, unsettling, and somehow perfectly fitting.

With his Ghostflame dagger touching the webbing, black fire erupted through the tunnel in a sudden hungry blast, scorching those too close and revealing that the webs were more than simple silk. They reacted like something alive, volatile, and dangerous. Sinora followed with Kimberly, slicing cleanly through strands that resisted flame and force, and the party pushed deeper.

The tunnel opened into a vast old mining chamber, its tracks running to the edge of a hollow working shaft. Broken railings, dead balconies, and old supports clung to the stone, but the true horror hung above them: massive pods suspended from the ceiling like pale fruit in a nightmare orchard. When Aedric Vale studied them, the truth settled over the party.

They were egg sacs.

For a moment, the group stood in the nest of the thing they had just slain, surrounded by what might one day become more horrors beneath Hearthglass. Egg tested one with fire, but it would not burn. Broj, still touched by Orchestra, gave the unsettling insight that the embryos did not sleep yet. In a place where sleep itself seemed to invite corruption, that mattered. They were not yet dreaming. Perhaps they were not yet claimed.

The party chose not to destroy the nest. Not out of comfort. Not out of certainty. But because the root of the nightmare still waited below, and every wasted spell, every burned minute, could cost them when they reached it.

The descent through the chamber was messy, grotesque, and almost absurd. Broj crashed through one of the egg masses and emerged covered in yellow gel and tiny clinging eggs. Zar'keth, falling after Quetzal became tangled in the wire-like webbing above, used his cannon to redirect himself midair and landed half-buried in another sac. Egg flew up to cut Quetzal loose, only for the touched strand to detonate in flame, proving again that the chamber itself was a trap waiting for the wrong hand.

At the bottom, the little drone led them toward a sand-floored passage. The party followed, wary but committed.

Then the sand swallowed them.

One by one, they dropped through the hidden passage beneath the surface and were scattered. Broj, Aedric Vale, and Zar'keth rolled into one cavern. Warwick Willows, Egg, Sorina, and Sinora landed elsewhere. Before either group could find the other, glittering eyes opened in the darkness above.

The monsters came down like things bred for ambush. They burrowed through stone and sand, vanished beneath the floor, and erupted beside their prey. Every time they were struck, a purple aura shimmered around them, catching the blow before it could bite flesh. Broj hit first, crashing into one with all his rage, only to see the protective field steal the force of his attack. He roared the warning to the others: the creatures had shields.

That became the rhythm of the fight. Break the aura. Hurt the monster. Survive the counterattack.

In the smaller chamber, Egg found the answer almost by accident. His alchemist's fire did more than burn — it disrupted the magic. When flame clung to the monsters, the purple shield struggled to return. It tried to wrap around them again, but the fire chewed at it, denying the creatures their protection. Suddenly, every vial mattered. Every spark mattered.

Sinora seized those openings with lethal precision. Once the aura was broken, Kimberly carved through the creatures with terrible ease, cutting scale, muscle, and bone like softened wax. Sorina became the lifeline of that side of the battle, keeping Warwick Willows from slipping away after he was torn down by claws and acid. Her Beacon of Hope turned healing into something radiant and stubborn — a refusal to let the dark claim anyone while she still had breath.

On the other side, Broj became the wall the monsters tried to break. They surrounded him, dove beneath him, rose beside him, and hammered him with brutal strikes. Again and again, he was dragged toward unconsciousness, and again and again the others pulled him back. Aedric Vale laid hands on him with just enough healing to keep him upright, just enough life to keep the rage burning.

Zar'keth, realizing the creatures hunted through vibration, turned the battlefield itself into a tool. He forced his shatterbox into the ground, trying to create a false tremor-lure, then drove his horns into the wall to keep himself off the floor. It was desperate, brilliant, and exactly the kind of madness that could only come from Zar'keth. When he warned Aedric Vale not to move, it was because the ground had become part of the trap.

Aedric Vale answered with his own battlefield instinct. He slipped close to heal Broj, then spilled lantern oil across the stone and sparked it alight, sending fire racing over the floor. The flame threatened the monsters, threatened the trap, and turned the cavern into a weapon waiting to explode.

Meanwhile, Warwick Willows shifted from survival to devastation. After being nearly overwhelmed, he tore himself out of danger with Thunder Step, leaving a violent burst behind him before reappearing across the chamber. From there, he hurled altered Scorching Rays as lightning, striking through gaps in the stone and punishing the monsters whenever their shields faltered.

The battle shone because no one won it alone. Egg made fire matter. Sinora made every opening bleed. Sorina kept the fallen standing. Warwick Willows turned distance into punishment. Zar'keth made invention out of panic. Aedric Vale held the line with healing, flame, and judgment. Broj took the punishment no one else could have endured and kept rising beneath it.

By the end, the party had learned the pattern and broken it. The monsters' shields failed. Their ambushes lost their edge. Their glittering eyes vanished into death and shadow.

When silence returned, it was not comforting. The party had survived the nest, the sand passage, and the split ambush, but the truth beneath Hearthglass had only grown clearer. The drider had been a guardian. These creatures were another layer of defense. And somewhere deeper, beyond eggs that had not yet dreamed and tunnels that swallowed the living whole, the source of the nightmare was still waiting.

⚔️ Key Events

  • Orchestra Named: Agelaius Phoeniceus notices Broj's eyes have gone gold once more and names the golden-eyed entity within him Orchestra — a crackling, layered chorus rather than a single voice.
  • The Ghostflame Cuts Through: Egg uses his Ghostflame dagger to burn through the webbing blocking the party's descent, only to discover the webs react violently, erupting in hungry black fire and scorching those too close.
  • The Mining Chamber: The party emerges into a vast abandoned shaft with old tracks, broken balconies, and massive pods hanging from the ceiling. The little crystalline drone continues to guide them.
  • The Egg Sacs Identified: Aedric Vale examines the hanging pods and confirms they are egg sacs belonging to the drider. Broj, touched by Orchestra, reports the embryos inside have not yet begun to dream.
  • The Nest Left Intact: After deliberation, the party chooses not to destroy the nest and pushes deeper, unwilling to spend resources before reaching the source of the corruption.
  • The Sand Takes Them: A hidden passage beneath the surface of a sand-floored chamber swallows the party one by one, splitting them into two separate groups in the dark.
  • The Ambush: Glittering eyes open above both groups simultaneously as magically enhanced monstrosities erupt from stone and sand, attacking with brutal precision.
  • The Purple Aura Discovered: Broj lands the first blow and feels the monster's protective field absorb the damage. He warns the others: the creatures have shields.
  • Fire Breaks the Shield: Egg discovers that alchemist's fire disrupts the purple aura, denying the creatures time to regenerate their defenses and turning flame into the key resource of the entire fight.
  • Both Groups Prevail: Despite the split, the sustained punishment, and Broj going down multiple times, both groups defeat their monstrosities and the silence below Hearthglass deepens once more.

⚔️ Combat Encounters

The Aura-Shielded Monstrosities — Split Ambush in the Sand Caverns

Enemies: Magically enhanced monstrosities with burrowing capability and purple aura damage negation — creatures that hunted through vibration, erupted from beneath the floor, and protected themselves with regenerating magic fields.

Outcome: Party victory in both chambers. The monstrosities' shields were consistently broken by fire before the killing blows landed.

Notable Moments:

  • Broj goes down multiple times in the eastern chamber, becoming the fulcrum around which the entire fight on that side pivoted — every time he fell, the others dragged him back.
  • Egg's alchemist fire proves the critical discovery of the session: the purple aura cannot fully reassert itself while fire burns on the creature's body, breaking the defensive rhythm entirely.
  • Zar'keth drives his shatterbox into the floor to create a false vibration lure, then braces his horns against the wall to keep himself elevated and off the sand — turning the creatures' own hunting sense against them.
  • Aedric Vale spills lantern oil across the stone and ignites it, transforming the floor of the chamber into a fire hazard that punished every burrowing attempt.
  • Warwick Willows uses Thunder Step to escape being overwhelmed, reappearing across the chamber before answering with Scorching Rays altered to strike as lightning.
  • Sorina's Beacon of Hope sustains the western group through repeated casualties, turning critical healing into enough to keep Warwick in the fight.
  • Sinora delivers the killing strikes in the western chamber once the shields fall, Kimberly cutting through the exposed creatures with devastating finality.

🔍 Important Discoveries

Orchestra — The Entity Within Broj

The golden-eyed presence that has periodically surfaced in Broj was named by Egg this session: Orchestra. It communicates in a layered, crackling chorus rather than a single voice, and it provided information about the egg sacs — specifically that the embryos had not yet begun to dream. The nature of its knowledge and its relationship to the corruption beneath Hearthglass remains unclear.

The Drider's Nest

The party descended through the drider's egg chamber. The pods could not be destroyed by conventional fire. The embryos within had not yet dreamed, meaning the crystal corruption that reshapes sleeping minds had not yet reached them. Whether the nest represents a future threat or something that can be addressed later remains an open question.

The Monstrosities Hunt Through Vibration

Zar'keth identified that the creatures tracked their prey through the vibration of footsteps on stone and sand. This opened tactical options — false lures, elevated positions, minimizing ground contact — that proved critical to surviving the ambush while split.

Fire Disrupts the Aura Shields

The purple protective fields that absorbed damage could not fully regenerate while alchemist's fire clung to the monstrosities. This made burning weapons the essential resource of the fight and suggests that whatever magic powers the shields may be vulnerable to sustained heat or combustion in future encounters.

The Layers of Defense Beneath Hearthglass

The drider was a guardian. These monstrosities were another. The party is learning the architecture of whatever protects the source of the corruption — and each layer that falls reveals another waiting beneath it.

✨ Character Moments

Agelaius Phoeniceus

Where others saw a golden-eyed anomaly and moved on, Egg gave it a name. Calling the entity within Broj Orchestra was not a formal ritual or a magical act — it was a choice to treat something unknown as something real. Later, the almost-accidental discovery that alchemist's fire broke the monstrosities' shields turned the whole battle. Egg saw what others could not yet see, acted on it, and shaped the outcome from it.

Broj

The golden eyes came back and Orchestra spoke through them with knowledge no one else carried. Then the ambush hit, and Broj became the wall. He went down, came back, went down again, and came back again. Each time, his fury was the reason the other side of the chamber held at all — the monsters focused on what kept swinging, and what kept swinging was him.

Aedric Vale

The truth of the egg sacs was delivered by Aedric Vale with the same calm he brought to everything clinical. Then, in the chaos of the split ambush, that calm translated directly into action: heal Broj, read the terrain, spill the oil, strike the spark. He turned a desperate defensive position into a trap.

Zar'keth

Panic and invention, in Zar'keth's hands, tend to look the same. Forcing his shatterbox into the ground and pressing his horns to the wall was not a plan anyone else would have formed in the time available. But it worked. He found the shape of the creatures' weakness and bent the fight around it before anyone else had fully understood what kind of fight it was.

Sorina

The western chamber nearly lost Warwick Willows more than once. Sorina did not let it. Beacon of Hope is not a dramatic spell — it does not end fights or fell enemies — but it kept the group breathing long enough to find their footing, and in a battle where fire was everything, keeping the fire-wielder standing mattered enormously.

Sinora

Precision is only as useful as the openings it can exploit. Sinora waited while the fire did its work, and the moment the aura shattered, Kimberly found everything the shield had been protecting. The western monstrosities did not survive those openings. They could not have.

Warwick Willows

Being overwhelmed was not the end. Thunder Step tore Warwick out of the press of bodies and dropped a concussive burst behind him as he went. The distance he created became the weapon — Scorching Rays altered to lightning, punishing the monsters through the gaps Sorina and Sinora were holding open.

🎭 Looking Ahead

The monstrosities are dead. The sand has given up its ambush. But the nest above still hangs in the dark, and the egg sacs have not yet begun to dream. The party carries hard-won knowledge — fire breaks the shields, vibration betrays position, and the layers of defense beneath Hearthglass are not random. They are deliberate. Each one has been placed between the party and whatever the city buried. The source of the nightmare is still waiting, deeper than the drider's nest and deeper than the sand that swallowed them whole. And Axioma, the Prism Sovereign, has not looked away.
