📜 Session Overview

The night in Vysteerie began the way trouble often does, with the party split three ways and everyone certain their path was the urgent one: Xerocomath already threading the dwarven city from within, Tyel'Koron and Sinora climbing toward the spire and its secrets, and Warwick, Broj, Sorina, and Agelaius "Egg" hunting down the magistrate who could open the stone gates for good. The climb up the spire felt endless, the rooms growing larger and grander as they rose, until Warwick's attempt at polite conversation with a cluster of elves turned into a quiet encirclement, the kind where smiles are friendly but feet are placed like locks. Instead of a fight, they were given a lesson: the elf guide led Warwick back to the same archway they had visited before and showed him how to open it properly, and one by one the others followed through the portal as if stepping from one world into the next.

On the far side, the air changed. They stood on an outdoor summit of carved stone, high above the dwarven city, with massive perches set around a long table like the place was meant for dragons to attend council like honored guests. Waiting there was the magistrate herself, modestly dressed and calm as winter, and she didn't care for stories. She wanted proof. She told them to show her they were riders, and they did, each in their own way—all except Egg, who held back while the others demonstrated the bond and the talent that came with it. Satisfied, the magistrate finally handed Warwick the means to enter the dwarven city, and that single gesture turned an elven test into a dwarven invitation.

They returned by striding and riding to the tight mountain entrance, where Xerocomath met them at the threshold and the guard finally let them pass. The tunnel was brutally small, so Xerocomath shrank Broj to fit, and Egg immediately abused the situation with the kind of mischief that only feels funny when you are not the one suddenly reduced to half-size; Broj folded like a felled tree. Inside, the city revealed its order the way dwarves prefer: carved in stone. A tablet at the entry laid out the whole underground sprawl, and Warwick translated it into a living map: the Gateworks above, the Stone Market at the heart, and Anvildeep below, with the Delves reaching into the mines and the Darkwater Works humming in the undercroft like a secret industry.

They moved deeper, talked their way past a pair of dwarven guards into the lower levels, and eventually spilled into the Stone Market where coin, craft, and ambition all clinked together. Egg and Sorina ranged toward Anvildeep and back again, selling wares to a smith and turning loot into practical gold. Warwick and Broj found what they always find when the world gets too heavy—a place to stay and drink—and at the Skipping Comet Inn Broj took to wrestling like it was a holy rite while the rest watched and nursed their cups. Xerocomath, meanwhile, left his own strange footprint, making a strong impression on a local dwarven alchemist, then leading Egg and Sorina toward a potion shop that soured the moment they stepped inside; after Xerocomath spoke privately with the shop tender and slipped away, the others entered to find the place vacant and rank with the stink of urine and feces, so foul it felt like a warning rather than neglect, and they backed out fast with plans to regroup at the tavern instead of buying anything that might have come from that air.

Far above all that stone and commerce, Tyel'Koron and Sinora lived a different kind of danger in the spire's grand library, where only elves moved and even footsteps seemed monitored. They sought knowledge with the desperation of people who know they are running out of time, and the attendant led them to the "dragon section"—a towering five-story shelf with several more like it, a wall of history that made mortal lives feel small. They studied hard, hunting for anything that might help against a shadow dragon and digging into deep histories: the Arcane Wane of the Second Era, the fall of the Third, territories ruled by regional dragons, and the slow turning of time that eventually broke dragon reign across Ethoria. Gem dragons stayed frustratingly distant, the crystal tombs barely more than a rumor, but one detail rang clear enough to chill the blood: the crystal tombs marked the beginning of the Fourth Era, and something about them was tied to endings, not beginnings.

After hours of reading until their eyes burned, they took a short respite on the garden level of the spire, trying to breathe like people who weren't carrying curses and prophecy in their pockets. That's when Tyel'Koron, prompted by thoughts stirred through his bonded dragon, asked Sinora about Vespera, hoping for answers about the orb embedded in his hand—the remnant of a curse he had torn from her back. The name came out into the air like it belonged there, but Sinora couldn't grasp it, as if the sound arrived as silence and the meaning refused to land. They tried again, and when Tyel'Koron pushed the name through the Realmstrider bond directly into her mind, it hit like a hammer. Both twins—Sinora and Sorina—collapsed into convulsions as if the name itself had teeth.

And in that split second, when Tyel'Koron's attention was on Sinora's writhing body and the world narrowed to panic, the hunters finally closed in. Cultists approached from behind with practiced certainty, gripping Tyel'Koron's arm and seizing his hand, and a blade drove down toward the orb with the brutal intent to take the whole hand with it. Steel bit deep enough to meet bone. Tyel'Koron tore free in a flash of desperate magic, striding away even as blood followed the cut, and Sinora forced herself up to help, only to stumble back into the grass as the real shape of the threat revealed itself. The Oni was there—the same kind of nightmare that once bit Sinora and cursed her with blood magic.

⚔️ Key Events

  • The Ascent Through the Spire: Warwick, Broj, Sorina, and Egg climbed the elven spire seeking the magistrate. Rooms grew grander with each level. A group of elves encircled Warwick—but guided him to the archway portal rather than confronting him.
  • The Magistrate's Summit: The portal deposited the party at a summit above the dwarven city—an outdoor stone council table lined with dragon perches. The modestly dressed magistrate requested each party member demonstrate their bond as riders before granting access to the dwarven city.
  • Egg Holds Back: Every party member proved their bond to their wyrmling except for Agelaius "Egg," who stood apart while the others performed.
  • Entry to the Dwarven City: Armed with the magistrate's pass, the party returned to the stone entrance. Xerocomath met them from inside. Broj was shrunk by the bard to fit the narrow passage—and immediately suffered for it when Egg used the size difference to lift him by his man parts.
  • The City Layout Revealed: A carved stone tablet at the entrance described the city's three bands: the Gateworks (upper), the Stone Market (middle), and Anvildeep (lower), with the Delves and Darkwater Works branching beyond.
  • Stone Market Exploration: The party split through the market—Egg and Sorina ranged to Anvildeep and sold wares to a smith; Warwick and Broj found the Skipping Comet Inn (Broj wrestled the innkeeper); Xerocomath visited a potion shop alone, leaving it smelling of urine and feces by the time Sorina and Egg arrived.
  • The Library and the Dragon Histories: Tyel'Koron and Sinora spent the day in the grand spire library, led to five stories of dragon-related tomes. They uncovered histories of the Second and Third Eras, the Arcane Wane, and the crystal tombs—the event that ended dragon reign and opened the Fourth Era.
  • The Name Vespera: On the garden level, Tyel'Koron attempted to ask Sinora about Vespera—the name tied to the orb in his hand. Spoken aloud, the name reached Sinora as silence. Pushed through the Realmstrider bond, it sent both twins—Sinora and Sorina—into violent convulsions simultaneously.
  • Cultist Ambush—The Blade at the Bone: While Tyel'Koron's attention was on the convulsing Sinora, cultists and an Oni closed in from behind. They seized his arm; a blade drove down toward the orb in his hand deep enough to meet bone. Tyel'Koron tore free by striding away with his bonded dragon. Sinora forced herself upright too late—and found the Oni standing there, the same creature that once cursed her with its blood magic.

⚔️ Combat Encounters

Cultist Ambush in the Spire Gardens

Enemies: Cultists, the Oni (the same that previously cursed Sinora)

Outcome: Tyel'Koron escaped by realmstriding mid-attack, taking a deep wound to his hand—steel that met bone. Sinora was left surrounded as Tyel'Koron strided out of reach, the Oni looming over her.

Notable Moments:

  • Tyel'Koron strided away even as the blade was buried in his arm—escaping at the cost of a grievous wound.
  • Sinora leapt to help but fell into the grass as Tyel'Koron vanished, leaving her face-to-face with the Oni that once bit and cursed her.
  • Both twins were mid-convulsion from the Vespera bond-whisper when the cultists moved in—perfectly timed by whoever is hunting the orb.

👥 NPCs Encountered

The Magistrate

Role: Overseer of Vysteerie / Gatekeeper of the Dwarven City

Modestly dressed and unhurried, she presided over a summit council table lined with dragon perches high above the city. She asked no questions—only for proof. Once satisfied the party were true riders, she handed over access to the dwarven city without ceremony.

Elven Guide

Role: Spire Resident / Escort

One of a group of elves who quietly encircled Warwick during his attempt at conversation. Rather than confronting him, the guide led him—and the others—back to the archway and demonstrated how to open it properly.

Spire Library Attendant

Role: Elven Librarian

Led Tyel'Koron and Sinora to the dragon section of the library—a five-story shelf with three more like it. Provided focused and efficient assistance without fanfare.

Dwarven Guards (Lower Levels)

Role: City Guard

A pair of guards blocking entrance to the lower levels. The party explained their purpose and were allowed through—no fight needed.

Dwarven Alchemist

Role: Potion Merchant

Made a strong impression on Xerocomath during a private conversation. The nature of that impression was made clear when Egg and Sorina arrived to find the shop vacant and reeking.

The Oni

Role: Antagonist / Cultist Leader

The same Oni that previously bit Sinora and cursed her with blood magic. Present at the ambush in the spire gardens, standing over Sinora after Tyel'Koron strided away.

🔍 Important Discoveries

The Dwarven City Layout

A carved stone tablet at the city entrance—translated by Warwick—revealed the full structure of the underground city:

  • Gateworks — Upper Band. Entry halls, customs, and city administration.
  • Stone Market — Middle Band. Commerce, crafts, inns, and trade.
  • Anvildeep — Lower Band. Deep industry, smithing, and production.
  • The Delves — The mines extending outward from the city.
  • Darkwater Works — The undercroft, a humming industrial underbelly.

Dragon Histories — The Crystal Tombs and the Fourth Era

Tyel'Koron and Sinora uncovered deep histories in the spire library: the Arcane Wane of the Second Era, the fall of the Third with its territories ruled by regional dragons, and critically—the crystal tombs. Rarely mentioned, the tombs are tied to the beginning of the Fourth Era and the end of dragon reign across the Realm of Ethoria. Little else about gem dragons could be found; the crystal tombs remain a well-kept mystery.

The Name Vespera Cannot Be Spoken to Sinora

The name Vespera—tied to the orb embedded in Tyel'Koron's hand—cannot reach Sinora through normal speech. When spoken aloud, she hears silence. When pushed through the Realmstrider bond, the name sent both twins into violent convulsions—Sinora on the garden level of the spire, and Sorina simultaneously in the dwarven city below. The name itself carries a force that targets them through their shared connection.

Someone Is Hunting the Orb

The cultist ambush was precise and patient—timed to strike exactly when Tyel'Koron's attention was consumed by Sinora's convulsions. The blade aimed directly at the orb embedded in his hand. The Oni's presence confirms this is the same faction that cursed Sinora. They know where the party is, they know about the orb, and they are willing to take the whole hand to claim it.

💰 Loot & Rewards

  • Magistrate's Pass: Granted to Warwick — official written entry permission to the dwarven city of Vysteerie.
  • Gold from Smithing: Egg and Sorina sold wares to a dwarven smith in Anvildeep, converting loot into coin.
  • Dragon Lore (Knowledge): Tyel'Koron and Sinora gathered extensive research on dragon histories, the Arcane Wane, and the crystal tombs from the spire library—information directly applicable to the fight ahead.

✨ Character Moments

Egg vs. Broj (Size Advantages)

Xerocomath shrank Broj to fit the narrow dwarven passage. Egg immediately took full advantage—lifting Broj off the ground by his man parts at random moments throughout the entry. Broj crumpled. The party kept walking.

Warwick's "Conversation" with the Elves

Warwick opened a friendly conversation with a group of elves in the spire—and found himself quietly surrounded before he'd finished his first sentence. Rather than trouble, it became an opportunity: the guide showed him what the party had been missing about the archway all along.

Sinora's Heart-to-Heart with Her Dragon

In the library, Sinora paused the research for a private conversation with her wyrmling about the path ahead—what the party is planning, what it will cost, and what the dragon thinks of it. The wyrmling did not pull punches.

Tyel'Koron and Sinora — The Name That Splits

After hours of reading, Tyel'Koron chose the quiet garden to finally ask Sinora about Vespera. He had hoped for answers about the orb from the curse he removed from her back. What he got instead was the discovery that the name itself is sealed from her—and when he pushed it through their shared bond, both twins seized and fell. The moment cost them more than time: it revealed exactly where they were to the people hunting the orb.

Broj at the Skipping Comet

While the party schemed and studied, Broj was exactly where Broj belongs—wrestling the innkeeper at the Skipping Comet with the enthusiasm of someone who has absolutely no concerns in the world. The inn approved.

Xerocomath and the Alchemist

Xerocomath made a strong impression on a local dwarven alchemist—privately. Whatever passed between them, it left the shop smelling thick with urine and feces by the time Egg and Sorina walked in shortly after. They turned around immediately. They will return another time, perhaps with better air.

📝 DM Notes

The split-party structure carried well this session—Tyel'Koron and Sinora's library arc provided steady tension and lore payoff while the main group handled the dwarven city entry, keeping both threads moving at a comparable narrative pace. The Vespera reveal landed exactly as intended: the name as a weapon, the Realmstrider bond as both tool and vulnerability, and the twins' simultaneous collapse as a signal to the audience that something much larger is attached to that orb.

The cultist ambush timing was a deliberate design choice—the hunters waited for maximum distraction. The fact that Tyel'Koron escaped with a deep wound rather than a clean getaway matters: the blade met bone, and that wound doesn't vanish between sessions. The Oni's reappearance reconnects the orb storyline directly to Sinora's personal curse narrative. Next session should address the immediate aftermath: Sinora face-down in the garden with the Oni standing over her, and Tyel'Koron gone but bleeding.

🎭 Looking Ahead

The Oni Stands Over Sinora

The session ended on a blade and a breath. Tyel'Koron is gone—wounded, strided away with his dragon, trailing blood. Sinora pulled herself back from convulsions just in time to see him vanish and find the Oni standing over her—the same creature that once marked her with its blood magic. The cultists are still in the garden. The orb is still in Tyel'Koron's hand, wherever he landed.

The party below, comfortable in the Stone Market with drinks and good coin, has no idea yet what happened in the spire. The gap between what each half of the party knows is about to close violently.
