📜 Session Overview

The party started the day scattered across the horseshoe ring over Vysteerie, staring down at the impossible city below like it was daring them to blink first. Everyone was up there—except Xerocomath and Warwick—and that fact didn't last long. Xerocomath realmstrided in fast from Theros… and immediately learned the hard way that appearing off the platform means you don't get a second to steady yourself. He fell, caught the attention of a young jabberwock wyrmling, and the creature answered with cruelty—slamming him down until he lay unconscious and bloodied on the stone far below.

Tyel'Koron didn't hesitate. He leapt after him, calling a gold wyrmling to aid the rescue, and when he hit the ground he found Xerocomath still alive—barely, hovering on the edge of slipping away. The others followed soon after, each calling to the wyrmlings they'd tried to bond with before. The ring became a ritual circle, and the air between the ring and the city became a long, screaming lesson.

Sorina hit the ground hard, went limp, and then—before anyone could even draw a breath around it—she succumbed to her wounds and left the plane. The shock wasn't that she died. The shock was that the silver wyrmling realmstrided with her. Tyel'Koron followed, landing with them in Theros just long enough to hear the dragon speak and command him to leave her be. He returned with the only mercy he could offer: Sorina wasn't lost, and she wasn't alone.

Up on the ring, the meaning of the test still felt wrong. How does falling to your death prove you can bond with a dragon—especially a child? But the wyrmlings didn't care about the question. They cared about the act. One by one, the party members threw themselves from the platform, died, and returned—each time tightening the bond between realmstrider and wyrmling. Death was the mechanism. The stride in death was the hook. And the wyrmlings were learning to follow.

By the end, the party sat in a grove on Theros with a new purpose carved into them the hard way. Not with victories, not with speeches—just the truth. They had fallen. They had died. And now, each of them had a small dragon standing behind them, tethered to the same strange path through the planes.

⚔️ Key Events

  • The First Fall: Xerocomath realmstrides to Vysteerie off-platform and plummets, drawing the ire of a jabberwock wyrmling that slams him unconscious. Tyel'Koron leaps after him with a gold wyrmling in tow, finding him barely alive.
  • Sorina's Shocking Death: Sorina hits the ground and dies, but the silver wyrmling realmstrides with her—the first confirmation that the dragons can follow their chosen through death. Tyel'Koron follows to Theros and is commanded by the dragon to leave her be.
  • The Wrong Name: Sinora calls her black wyrmling by the wrong name and it violently throws her from the platform. She dies, realmstrides, and the dragon follows—solidifying the strange bond.
  • Warwick's Strange Stride: Warwick performs an enhanced stride and sees visions of water and blue before attempting to Misty Step. He finds himself floating in saltwater before reality snaps back and the ground claims him anyway.
  • Deliberate Deaths: The party realizes dying is the key—Tyel'Koron, Broj, and Xerocomath all deliberately end their lives by jumping from the ring, each time bringing their wyrmling with them through the realmstride.
  • The Grove Gathering: The party regroups at a grove on Theros, each with their wyrmling standing vigil. They mentally connect and begin communicating with their new dragon companions, learning their names and personalities.
  • The Pact Sealed: Through repeated deaths and resurrections, the party forges pacts with their wyrmlings—not as mounts like the Githyanki, but as companions bound to the leylines of realmstriding itself.

⚔️ Combat Encounters

The Jabberwock's Wrath

Enemy: Young Jabberwock Wyrmling (Chigintonth, The Creep)

Outcome: Xerocomath was brutally slammed unconscious multiple times. The encounter evolved from hostile combat to a bonding ritual through repeated deaths.

Notable Moments:

  • The jabberwock used its fiery eye rays to burn and pummel Xerocomath to a bloodied state on the ground
  • Xerocomath deliberately provoked the creature on his return, inciting another fight before falling again with the wyrmling close behind
  • The jabberwock eventually followed Xerocomath through death, forging the strangest bond of the party

The Trials of Flame and Falling

Enemies: Multiple Wyrmlings (Red, Silver, Black, Gold, Green, Blue)

Outcome: Each party member endured their wyrmling's elemental attacks during the fall. Survival was secondary to bonding.

Notable Moments:

  • Broj endured the painful fire of a Red Dragon wyrmling plus the crushing impact of the fall—and survived the first time
  • Sorina took the cold ice breath of a Silver wyrmling before succumbing to her wounds
  • Sinora's black wyrmling revealed the truth: "To Die!" was the goal of bonding
  • The black wyrmling transformed into a shadow dragon during the bonding, its golden eyes swirling with black mist

🔍 Important Discoveries

The True Nature of Wyrmling Bonding

The party discovered they weren't bonding these dragons like the Githyanki riders do—using them as mounts. Instead, they were bonding the wyrmlings to the leylines of realmstriding itself. Death was the mechanism. The stride in death would bring the wyrmling with them on their journey through the planes.

The young dragons stood vigil over the unconscious forms of their chosen companions, pulling them through the aether. This wasn't a bond of domination or service—it was something stranger and deeper, tying two souls to the same path through reality.

Realmstrider Death Timers Reset

Upon each death during the bonding process, the party's Realmstrider safety timers reset. This meant they could die and return multiple times during the trial without permanent consequences—a necessary feature for a bonding ritual that required repeated deaths.

The Shadow Dragon Transformation

Sinora's black wyrmling transformed into a shadow dragon during the bonding process. Its golden eyes swirled with black mist and shadows, suggesting that wyrmlings can evolve or transform based on their bond and the nature of their chosen companion.

💰 Loot & Rewards

  • Wyrmling Bonds: Each party member forged a pact with a wyrmling companion, bound to their realmstriding ability. These dragons will follow them through death and across the planes.
  • Knowledge of the Bonding Ritual: Understanding how to bind creatures to the leylines of realmstriding—knowledge that could prove invaluable or dangerous.
  • Experience: The party gained experience through the trials, though the true reward was the companionship of the wyrmlings.
  • Reset Death Timers: All Realmstrider death protection timers were reset through the bonding process.

✨ Character Moments

Tyel'Koron's Heroic Leap

Without hesitation, Tyel'Koron threw himself off the ring to save Xerocomath, calling a gold wyrmling to his aid. When he found his companion barely alive, it showed his unwavering loyalty. Later, he followed Sorina through death to Theros, only to be commanded by her dragon to leave her be—a moment of powerlessness that defined his respect for the bond.

Sorina's Peaceful Passing

Sorina became the first to complete the death-bond, slipping away with Clisculit watching over her. The silver wyrmling's protective vigil in Theros showed that even in death, she wasn't alone—a tender moment in a brutal trial.

Sinora's Revelation

After calling her dragon by the wrong name and being violently thrown from the platform, Sinora asked the simple question: what was the goal of this bond? The answer—"To Die!"—was delivered with such matter-of-fact certainty that she shrugged and jumped again. Her uneasy, unconcerned demeanor as she explained this to the others was both unsettling and perfectly in character.

Xerocomath Stirring the Hornet's Nest

True to form, Xerocomath didn't just accept the trial—he deliberately provoked the jabberwock wyrmling on his return, reigniting the fight before falling again. His willingness to embrace chaos and pain for the sake of the bond showed the depth of his commitment, however unorthodox.

Broj's Mountain Stubbornness

Broj walked off the ring with no aid and smashed into the ground like a falling statue—and somehow survived the first time, stubborn as a mountain. His sheer resilience and refusal to quit, even in the face of repeated death, embodied his character perfectly.

Warwick's Vision

Warwick's enhanced stride brought visions of deep blue water and saltwater before the ground claimed him. His attempt to use Misty Step to soften the fall showed tactical thinking even in the face of certain death—though gravity didn't care about flair.

The Memorable Exchange

"Are you good?" Warwick asked.

"No, I think we are supposed to die," Sinora replied.

This moment of dark humor perfectly captured the surreal horror and acceptance of what the party was being asked to do.

📝 DM Notes

This session was one of the most unique and memorable bonding experiences I've run. The concept of requiring death to forge the wyrmling pact created genuine tension and moments of dark humor. The players embraced the surreal horror of repeatedly throwing themselves to their deaths with a mix of determination and gallows humor.

Highlights from behind the screen:

  • The moment when Sorina's wyrmling realmstrided with her was completely unexpected by the players and created a perfect "aha!" moment
  • Sinora's deadpan delivery of "To Die!" became an instant classic quote
  • Each dragon's personality emerged organically during the bonding process
  • The transformation of the black wyrmling into a shadow dragon was improvised based on Sinora's character arc and worked beautifully
  • Warwick's salt water vision foreshadows future events
  • The jabberwock bonding with Xerocomath feels perfectly chaotic for both characters

For next session: The party now has wyrmling companions that will grow with them. Need to establish how the dragons interact with combat, exploration, and social situations. Also, the party needs to decide their next move now that the bonding is complete.

🎭 Looking Ahead

The session ended with the party gathered in the grove on Theros, each with their wyrmling companion standing vigil behind them. They had survived the trial—or rather, they had died through it—and emerged changed. The bonds were forged, the names were learned, and the dragons were no longer just creatures to be tamed but companions bound to the same strange path through the planes.

Tyel'Koron healed Warwick as the fog of repeated endings cleared. Each dragon's personality became more apparent: Dalnylthir's nobility, Ruroko's understanding, Droonoth's fierce loyalty, Vuldel's mystery, Clisculit's protective nature, Skeznin's dark wisdom, and Chigintonth's unsettling presence.

But questions remain: How will these bonds evolve? What was the true purpose behind the Vysteerie trial? And what awaits the party now that they are bound to these ancient creatures? The wyrmlings may be young, but they carry ancient knowledge in their eyes—knowledge that cost the party their lives to earn.

Next session: The party must decide their next destination and begin learning what it truly means to walk the planes with a dragon at their side.
