Xavril appeared as a guide through the treacherous bramble forests between Wyrmhollow Reach and Vysteerie. With knowledge of the dangerous terrain and the hushstalkers that hunt there, he led the party through landscapes where magic itself becomes a beacon for predators.
From the moment of contact, something felt wrong about Xavrilânot overtly threatening, but unsettling in ways that defied easy explanation. The party sensed his awareness of this wrongness, as if he himself knew something was deeply amiss with either the group or his own mind.
The Ravine Incident
Session 033: Crossing the Chasm
At a ravine filled with brambles, Xavril nearly fell while clearing a path across a fallen tree. Egg saved himânot once, but twiceâas the brambles threatened to send him plummeting into the depths. During the struggle, Xavril lost his sword to the ravine.
Without hesitation, Egg offered his own blade to Xavril. This gesture of trust and sacrifice became a defining moment, cementing an unspoken bond despite the unsettling aura surrounding the guide.
The Disturbing Vision
Realmstride Horror
When Myrium arrived and began realmstriding the party, TyelKoron and Egg took Xavril with them during the planar transition. During the stride, Egg was hit with a horrid vision of screamingâa psychic assault directly tied to Xavril's presence.
The experience felt like a mind brushing against the party with something sharp and wrong. It wasn't an attack in the traditional sense, but rather Xavril's very existence triggering painful reactions in those sensitive to planar energies during realmstride.
Myrium's Connection
When Myrium greeted the party at the platform, she stunned everyone by kissing Xavrilâa gesture suggesting a relationship or connection previously unknown to the group. This raised more questions about who Xavril truly is and what his relationship to Myrium entails.
Given Myrium's own cryptic nature and planeswalker abilities, her connection to Xavril adds another layer of mystery to an already enigmatic figure.
Nature Unknown
Xavril's true nature remains one of the campaign's unresolved mysteries. Several possibilities exist:
- He may be affected by something externalâpossessed, cursed, or transformed
- His presence could be naturally disturbing to Realmstriders or those sensitive to planar energies
- He might be something wearing a humanoid form, with his true nature bleeding through during planar transitions
- The wrongness could be tied to Myrium and whatever she represents
What's certain is that Xavril himself seems aware something is wrong, suggesting either internal struggle or growing self-awareness of his true nature.
Current Status
Xavril's current whereabouts and status remain unknown. He guided the party through the bramble forests and was present when Myrium realmstrided them to Tarkir, but his fate after that point is unclear.
He carries Egg's swordâa blade given in trust and friendshipâand the memory of being saved twice over a ravine of brambles. Whatever Xavril truly is, those moments of vulnerability and kindness were real.
Warnings & Guidance
Despite the disturbing nature of his presence, Xavril provided genuine help:
- Guided the party safely through hushstalker territory
- Warned them that magic paints targets on their backs in the bramble forests
- Shared knowledge about how the brambles act as spider webs for predators
- Led them to Myrium's meeting point at the platform
Whether his aid was genuine compassion, obligation, or something else entirely remains to be seen.
