Sir Magnus Opus U'rilius Corbus

Sir Magnus Opus U'rilius Corbus

The Arch Mage of Cerilian Spire

Overview

Title: Arch Mage, Lord of the Cerilian Spire

Alignment: Lawful Evil

Status: Enemy / Defeated

First Appearance: Session 020

Background

Sir Magnus Opus U'rilius Corbus was the despised mage-lord who ruled over the crystalline mining town beneath the Cerilian Spire. A powerful wizard with a dark obsession, Magnus was known for his collection of severed Realmstrider heads—trophies from members of the Ætherborn Kin displayed in his hidden chambers.

His surface demeanor presented a cultured, scholarly mage interested in crystalline research and mining operations. However, beneath the Spire lay his true laboratory—a sinister facility where he imprisoned Realmstriders as living leyline batteries, draining their power to fuel his experiments.

Role in the Campaign

Session 020: First Encounter

The party first encountered Magnus after arriving at the crystal mining town. He presented himself as a legitimate authority figure, though the party sensed something deeply wrong about him.

Sessions 021-022: The Trap

Magnus enlisted the party to clear blocked mine passages where trespassers had become fused with essence-draining crystals. After their work and a tragic accident with Loid's goodberries, Magnus used the party's confession as justification to imprison them beneath the Cerilian Spire in magic-dampened cells.

Sessions 023-029: The Truth Revealed

Imprisoned as living leyline batteries, the party discovered Magnus's true nature. In his hidden laboratory, they found his collection of Realmstrider heads and freed Porthos, an albino giant Realmstrider held captive for years. Porthos's violent awakening destroyed the laboratory in crimson fire. The final confrontation led to a catastrophic battle on Theros that ended in a mushroom cloud explosion.

Abilities & Powers

  • Arcane Mastery: Powerful wizard with extensive magical knowledge
  • Leyline Manipulation: Ability to drain and use Realmstrider energy
  • Crystal Magic: Specialized in essence-draining crystalline magic
  • Political Power: Authority over the crystal mining operations
  • Dark Collection: Possessed severed heads of Ætherborn Kin Realmstriders

Personality & Motivations

Magnus presented a facade of scholarly refinement while harboring deep cruelty and obsession. His collection of Realmstrider heads revealed a disturbing fixation on planeswalkers and their power. He viewed Realmstriders as resources to be exploited rather than people—imprisoning them as living batteries and collecting trophies from the dead.

His motivations appeared tied to accumulating power through Realmstrider energy, though his ultimate goals remained partially mysterious. The presence of Ætherborn Kin heads suggested connections to larger, darker forces.

Legacy

Magnus's defeat freed Porthos and ended the imprisonment of Realmstriders beneath the Cerilian Spire. However, his collection of Ætherborn Kin heads and the scope of his operations raised troubling questions about who he was working with and how many other Realmstriders had suffered his experiments.

The party's encounter with Magnus marked a turning point—revealing the existence of those who hunt Realmstriders not as enemies in open war, but as collectors treating planeswalkers as valuable commodities.
