First Appearance: Sessions 023-029

Background

Porthos is an albino giant Realmstrider who was held captive by Arch Mage Sir Magnus Opus for years, imprisoned as a living leyline battery in the sinister laboratory beneath the Cerilian Spire. During his captivity, he was drained of his planeswalker energy to fuel Magnus's dark experiments.

When the party was captured and imprisoned in the same facility, Xercomath—trapped in a birdcage—coordinated their escape through telepathy. The party freed Porthos, whose violent awakening unleashed years of pent-up rage and power.

The Crimson Awakening

Destruction of the Laboratory

Porthos's awakening was catastrophic and beautiful. Crimson fire erupted from him as years of suppressed Realmstrider power exploded outward, destroying Magnus's laboratory in a spectacular display of planeswalker fury. The awakening was less a spell and more a primal release—raw energy given form through righteous anger.

The crimson flames that accompanied his awakening became his signature, marking him as a Realmstrider whose power runs hot and fierce, tempered by years of suffering.

Role as Guardian

After escaping Magnus's laboratory and surviving the catastrophic battle on Theros that ended in a mushroom cloud explosion, Porthos chose to remain with the party—specifically taking on the role of guardian for Loid, the sentient illithid-grown airship.

His choice to protect Loid speaks to his nature: despite years of imprisonment and torture, Porthos emerged with his compassion intact. He recognized Loid's emerging sentience and vulnerability, choosing to be the protector he himself never had during his captivity.

Abilities & Powers

  • Realmstrider: Ability to walk between planes
  • Crimson Fire: Destructive flame magic awakened through trauma and liberation
  • Giant Physiology: Immense size and strength
  • Leyline Sensitivity: Deep connection to magical energies (enhanced/damaged by captivity)
  • Protective Instincts: Fierce guardian when defending those under his care

Personality

Porthos carries the weight of years of captivity, yet maintains a gentle spirit. He speaks little, but his actions reveal deep empathy and loyalty. His albinism makes him visually striking—a giant figure with pale skin and hair, marked by the scars of imprisonment.

Despite what was done to him, Porthos hasn't become bitter. Instead, he channels his experience into protection—ensuring others don't suffer as he did. His relationship with Loid is particularly tender; he treats the sentient ship with patience and understanding, communicating through gesture and presence.

Current Status

Porthos remains with Loid, serving as both guardian and companion. While the party adventures across the planes, Porthos provides security and care for their sentient ship. His presence ensures Loid is never alone or vulnerable—a kindness Porthos knows the value of intimately.

The crimson fire of his awakening still burns within him, ready to be called upon if Loid or his allies face threat. He represents both the cost of Magnus's cruelty and the resilience of those who survive it.
