Habitat: Magical forests, leyline-rich areas
First Encounter: Session 032
Description
White Apes are massive albino primates with supernatural awareness of magical energies. Standing over eight feet tall with thick white fur and intelligent, malevolent eyes, these creatures are drawn to concentrations of magical power like predators to blood in water.
Their most distinctiveâand terrifyingâfeature is their ability to sense spellcasting and magical signatures from great distances. In areas where they hunt, the use of magic becomes a death sentence, painting targets on spellcasters that the White Apes can track through terrain that would stop lesser predators.
Arcane Wasting
The Contagious Curse
Infection Method: Those struck by White Apes risk infection with Arcane Wastingâa deadly magical curse that spreads through the victim's body.
Symptoms:
- Visible darkening and decay of infected areas
- Progressive weakness and exhaustion
- Magical energy drainage
- Spreading corruption that moves through the victim's system
- Eventual death if untreated
Transmission: The curse spreads through targeted spellsâcasting magic at an infected individual can transfer the Arcane Wasting to the caster, creating a horrifying dilemma for healers and allies.
Treatment: Requires divine intervention or extremely powerful healing magic. Standard healing spells may slow the progression but risk infection spreading to the caster.
Session 032: The Attack
TyelKoron's Mistake
When the party attempted to wake unconscious pteranodons after the Dream Deity incident, TyelKoron's Speak with Plants spell inadvertently summoned White Apes to their location. The magical signature acted as a beacon, drawing the predators directly to the vulnerable party.
The brutal combat that followed left Sorina and Xercomath infected with Arcane Wasting. By morning, both showed visible signs of illnessâthe curse spreading through them in ugly, undeniable ways.
Combat Tactics
- Magic Sensing: Can detect spellcasting from miles away
- Pack Hunters: Often attack in coordinated groups
- Brutal Strength: Powerful melee attacks with diseased claws
- Terrain Advantage: Excellent climbers and ambush predators
- Persistent: Will track magical signatures for days
- Curse Vectors: Every successful attack risks Arcane Wasting infection
Behavior & Ecology
White Apes inhabit regions with high magical concentration, particularly areas near leylines or planar boundaries. They've evolvedâor been createdâto hunt magic users specifically, making them natural predators of spellcasters and Realmstriders.
Their intelligence is uncertain but appears higher than mundane apes. They demonstrate understanding of magical patterns, can set ambushes based on predicted spell use, and seem to derive sustenance from magical energy itself.
Some scholars theorize they were created as anti-mage weapons during ancient wars. Others suggest they're a natural evolution in magically saturated environments. Regardless of origin, they represent a fundamental threat to anyone who relies on spellcasting.
Survival Guidelines
If You Encounter White Apes:
- Minimize Magic Use: Every spell is a beacon
- Move Quickly: They can track magical signatures for miles
- Avoid Infection: Those infected become liabilities in combat
- Use Mundane Weapons: Melee and non-magical ranged attacks don't draw them
- Seek Divine Aid: Only powerful healing can cure Arcane Wasting
- Don't Cast at the Infected: Risk spreading the curse to yourself
Known Victims
Sorina: Infected during Session 032 combat. Cured by Nymis's unicorn in Session 033.
Xercomath: Infected during Session 032 combat. Cured by Nymis's unicorn in Session 033.
Both survivors bore visible signs of infection for days before treatmentâa reminder of how quickly Arcane Wasting can progress and how devastating these creatures' attacks can be.
