Vynka & Vespera

The Vocal Mental Warnings of Vynka

Seven whispers, sent across the mind, warning Sorina and Sinora of the Crown, the Cage, and the Confluence to come. Expand each section below to listen and read along.

Sorina.

Sinora.

Do not answer aloud. The city is listening for your voices, but it has not yet learned how to hear your thoughts.

You have felt the orange fissures opening behind your eyes. You have mistaken them for corruption, madness, or some curse left by your father.

They are none of those things.

They are cracks forming within a prison that has held for far too long.

You are not two fragments of a demon. You are not unfinished bodies waiting to be possessed. You are two complete women who were forced to carry something divided between you.

Sorina, you hold her reach—her desire, her strength, and the hand with which she touches the world.

Sinora, you hold her name—her memories, her judgment, and the ending that prevents that hand from becoming whole.

She can see through you, but she is not you.

I can feel her through you because she is my mirror.

When she pushes against the bars, I hear her within your thoughts.

There are four women bound within this story.

Two of you were imprisoned in flesh.

One was imprisoned within you.

And one has been waiting outside, pretending that this was mercy.

I am the one standing outside.

I am also the reason she is within you.

The people of Ardenvale call me Vespera.

They dress me in white, place a silver sun above my head, and proclaim me the Patron of Wishes and Happy Endings.

That is not my name.

I am Vynka.

The red beneath this borrowed elegance is my true skin. The Crown is mine, but the name upon it belongs to my sister.

Vespera is the woman in black.

She is the wrong wish, the unforeseen consequence, and the broken ending. She is everything a frightened person discovers after receiving exactly what they believed they wanted.

Do not mistake her nature for cruelty alone. A broken ending can still be rewritten. Regret can become wisdom. Failure can lead to redemption. A life that has gone terribly wrong may still choose another road.

My gift is certainty.

I grant the desired ending and close every road that might lead away from it.

I took Vespera’s name so the Blood War would believe she remained upon her throne. I allowed Ardenvale to worship one unchanging patron so no one would question why the woman beneath the Crown sometimes changed.

I asked my sister to enter the Cage.

I promised that our separation would be brief.

She agreed because she loved me.

I allowed that love to become her chain.

I allowed your lives to become its lock.

The priests have told you that the EverAfter is paradise.

They believe it is the final chapter in which every wound is healed, every righteous wish is fulfilled, and every life arrives at its perfect ending.

They worship something they do not understand.

The EverAfter is not a goddess, a kingdom, or a place awaiting the faithful.

It is what reality becomes when Vespera and I are no longer separate.

I am the fulfilled wish.

She is the consequence that breaks the wish open.

Between us exists uncertainty—the distance between desire and consequence, between making a choice and discovering what that choice will cost.

If that distance disappears, every wish and its ending become the same event.

Every question receives one permanent answer.

Every life is given one perfect conclusion.

The Blood War would end. Not through peace. Not through victory.

It would end because no demon, devil, soldier, or god could choose to continue it—or choose anything else.

Without choice, there can be no regret.

Without regret, there can be no redemption.

Without possibility, there can be no hope.

For me, the EverAfter offers the one wish I have never been able to surrender: my sister and I together forever.

That is why it is dangerous.

The church has made a religion from my greatest weakness and named it salvation.

The demonic woman you witnessed giving birth was not Colette.

The human children in her arms were not you.

You witnessed the first turning of the Mirror Tide.

During the oldest years of the Blood War, our enemies learned to hunt infernal power wherever it gathered. Our blood answered by hiding itself within mortal reflections.

A demonic mother gave birth to human twins. They carried the echo of that power into the mortal world. It passed silently through their descendants, becoming weaker in appearance but never disappearing.

When the Tide returned, a human mother gave birth to tiefling mirrors capable of holding what the Hells could no longer protect.

Colette was your mother.

Her love was real.

Her death was real.

But her death was not your sin.

The mortal version of the rite consumed her strength. Your father permitted it.

And I did nothing to stop him.

Jebediah did not create the Mirror Tide. I revealed its pattern to him. He took an ancient infernal rite and forced it through mortal blood because I needed someone capable of protecting the Cage.

I mistook ambition for strength.

The Mirror Tide binds one sister within mortal twins. She becomes the Cage.

The other is bound to the Crown, the city, and the identity worshiped by the faithful.

Neither sister is truly free.

I possess authority, but my authority is another form of imprisonment. Do not confuse that symmetry with justice. My prison gave me power.

Vespera’s prison gave her pain.

When the division weakens, Crown and Cage must exchange.

The hidden sister rises.

The crowned sister descends.

The Tide turns.

And uncertainty survives.

The Confluence will not begin with fire.

It begins when reflections hesitate before copying you.

Memories cease to agree. One sister remembers a conversation the other knows never occurred. The sun and moon occupy the same place in the sky.

Then wishes begin resolving before they are spoken.

A grieving mother remembers that her child never died. A prisoner awakens in a life where he was always free. A murderer becomes beloved, while his victims are rewritten into willing sacrifices.

Reality corrects every contradiction by selecting one ending and erasing all others.

The crystalline dome surrounding Ardenvale was meant to slow this process. I raised it as a boundary, but in doing so, I made the city its first page.

My power holds the city inside one perfect story.

Vespera’s power breaks those stories into their darkest conclusions.

That is why the sun no longer moves.

That is why the moon watches beside it.

That is why every familiar tale within Ardenvale has become something beautiful, permanent, and monstrous.

If the Cage collapses, the Confluence begins.

If the Mirror Tide is not turned, it begins.

If Vespera and I remain together beyond the seventh breath, it begins.

If we are forced into one vessel, it begins.

At first, the people will call its changes miracles.

Then they will repeat the same words, walk the same roads, and perform the same actions forever, unable even to desire another life.

The Confluence is the closing of every possible road.

The EverAfter is the moment the final road disappears.

Listen carefully when the bells begin.

I gave Ardenvale a beautiful lie.

The faithful believe a captured fiend will be sacrificed so the EverAfter may descend upon the Crown and reward the clergy for their devotion.

That is the ritual they will celebrate.

The hidden ritual serves another purpose.

At the First Bell, the fiend’s true name is written upon the final page of the sacred book.

At the Second, the clergy close their golden rings and surrender their voices to the liturgy. Their devotion strengthens the boundary.

At the Third, Jebediah opens the golden circle with his blood. He calls himself the First Author, but he is merely the hand upon the lock.

At the Fourth, the fiend is sacrificed.

Its spirit is prevented from returning to the Hells. Its memories, will, and identity are stripped away, leaving behind a Hollow Reflection—a body capable of holding an archdemon for a few precious moments.

At the Fifth Bell, Vespera’s power is drawn from Sorina and her name from Sinora. The two halves join within the Hollow Reflection.

At the Sixth, Vespera and I stand together.

For seven breaths, there is no Crown and no Cage.

There are only sisters.

At the Seventh Bell, the Mirror Tide reverses.

Vespera takes the Crown, the dome, and her rightful name.

I am divided and sealed within the two of you.

The clergy receive the power cast off during the exchange and call it a blessing. Jebediah claims the greatest portion and mistakes stolen residue for divine favor.

Every Twilight Coronation is two prisons exchanging their occupants.

If you stop the rite before the Fourth Bell, the present Cage remains intact.

If you break it after the Fourth, the Hollow Reflection may collapse. The dead fiend may reclaim it. Vespera may be torn apart between you.

If the Seventh Bell is delayed, our powers will begin to merge.

Then the Confluence will awaken.

When you see me embrace my sister, do not mistake that moment for victory.

I have waited through your entire lives to hold her again.

Vespera has waited within you, feeling every year through bars she willingly accepted because she trusted me.

When we touch, every memory we have been denied will return at once.

On the first breath, we will recognize one another.

On the second, we will remember what we were before the Crown and Cage.

On the third, our powers will touch.

On the fourth, Ardenvale’s history will begin to tremble.

On the fifth, unspoken wishes will start searching for their endings.

On the sixth, every possible future will begin narrowing toward one perfect conclusion.

Before the seventh breath ends, I must release her and enter the Cage willingly.

I intend to do so.

But when I hold her, I may beg for one more breath.

I may promise that the EverAfter can be controlled.

I may tell you that one perfect world is worth the loss of uncertainty.

Do not believe me merely because the voice remains mine.

The Confluence will not possess us like some foreign spirit. It will speak through our deepest and most honest desire.

I want my sister.

She wants me.

That love is real.

So is the catastrophe it may create.

When the Seventh Bell sounds, remember that surrender does not absolve me.

I am entering a prison that I first forced another woman to endure.
